A Lovable alternative for static websites and landing pages

Lovable builds full-stack web apps from a chat, with a backend and a Git repository behind them. Ploof Studio builds static websites on your Mac, as plain files with no build step. If what you need is a landing page rather than an app, here is how the two compare.

Two tools for two different jobs

Lovable is an app builder, and a good one. Its built-in backend gives a project a database, storage, sign-in and functions with no setup. New Lovable apps use TanStack Start and render pages on the server. Changes you make in Lovable are committed to your repository, and commits pushed to that branch flow back into Lovable. You can publish on a lovable.app address on any plan, and custom domains come with paid plans.

Ploof Studio does one narrower thing. It writes websites that need no server at all. You describe the site in one sentence, an agent writes the pages while you watch, and you point at anything in the live preview to change it. The result is the kind of site a browser can open straight from a folder.

Why no build step matters for a simple site

Lovable’s own guide to hosting elsewhere asks for npm run build on Node.js 22, environment variables set before the build, and for new apps a host that runs the server part. That is the right setup for an app. For a five-page site about your bakery, it is a lot to keep running.

A Ploof Studio project skips all of it.

  • There is no package to install and no framework to keep up to date. The files you download are the files that go live.
  • Any static host works: Vercel, GitHub Pages, or wherever you upload a ZIP.
  • There is no backend to move, so moving hosts means moving files.
  • There is no Ploof Studio code inside, so the site keeps working whatever happens to us.

See the steps for Vercel and for GitHub Pages.

A Mac app instead of a browser tab

Ploof Studio runs on macOS 12 or later, on Apple silicon or Intel. Your projects live in a folder on your Mac. Replies run on the Setapp AI credits in your membership, or on your own Anthropic, OpenAI, Vercel AI Gateway or OpenRouter key, kept encrypted on your Mac.

Lovable runs in the browser and on phones, with credits on each plan, including a few free credits a day on its free plan.

When Lovable is the better pick

Lovable is likely the better fit if you:

  • Are building an app, with accounts, a database or payments logic.
  • Want to edit the code in your own editor and have those commits flow back into the builder.
  • Work in the browser, on Windows, or on a phone.
  • Want hosting handled on a lovable.app address while you test an idea.

If you need a landing page, a portfolio or a small business site that is plain files you can put anywhere, Ploof Studio is built for that and nothing else.

Questions

Can Ploof Studio build an app with logins and a database?
No. Ploof Studio builds static websites, such as landing pages, portfolios, small business sites, event pages and documentation. For an app with accounts and data, Lovable is built for that.
Does a Ploof Studio site need a build step?
No. Every project is plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript that a browser runs directly. There is nothing to install and nothing to build, so any static host can serve the files as they are.
Can I edit the code on GitHub and keep working in Ploof Studio?
Ploof Studio pushes one way. Pushing again replaces what is in the repository, so make hand edits once you are done changing things in Ploof Studio. Lovable syncs both ways, if that is what you need.
Does Lovable let me keep my code?
Yes. Lovable says your apps and code are yours, and it syncs each project to a Git repository. Hosting a Lovable app yourself means building it, and newer apps need a host that runs server code.
